John Wesley introduced the annual covenant renewal service for use by Methodist societies in 1755. Every year, on or near January 1st, the Methodists gathered to renew their covenant with God. The service is a powerful time of self-examination and confession that culminates in renewal of commitment to discipleship. The heart of this service, focused in the Covenant Prayer, requires us to commit ourselves to God, with the spiritual challenge of remaining faithful to our covenant agreement.

This service is a means of grace that gives each of us an opportunity to recommit ourselves to living and practicing our baptismal covenant with God. It reminds us of our commitment to be witnesses to Jesus Christ in the world by the way we live and love every day.
